No, it is definately not official. The only place where you can buy merchandise is during the gigs at the merchandise stand and in their own webshop. If you buy so-called merchandise in stores, the band won't earn a penny of it.

3.12. What does the "The Phantom Agony" video mean? What's it about?

According to Simone:
The makers of the video have interpreted "The Phantom Agony" as fear. In the video, I'm searching for my fears. That's why I'm looking around me all the time. The rest of the band, as torturers, represent my fear. Eventually it turned that that I follow my own fear, because it doesn't exist (a Phantom agony). Then the torturers are dead, because my fear doesn't exist. Then I commit suicide by falling in the water.

3.13. What does the "Feint" video mean? What's it about?

The song itself was written due to the death of the dutch politician Pim Fortuyn. The makers of the clip wanted old material from a movie called "Der Müde Tod" by Frits Lang from 1921, but it was too expensive they decided to recreate it. The black & white part is about a child who dies, and his mother begs Death to give her child back. But that's impossible, and so the mother dies as well.
They also decided to record the clip in a church because of the association with death, and because of it's atmosphere.

3.14. What does the "Quietus" video mean? What's it about?

The band members are working in a mine to keep the earth alive. If they stop working, there will be really bad consequences. The machines in the video keep moving because of their work. Then they are enchanted by a woman, Simone.

4.2. Which songs are on the demo?

There are two songs on the demo, Cry For The Moon & Illusive Consensus.

4.3. Where can I buy the demo?

It has been for sale on the Sahara Dust website, but it was limited to 200 copies only. As far as I know, you can't buy them anywhere. The lucky owners of one of the demo's probably won't sell them.

4.4. The text sounds different than the songs released on the Phantom Agony. Is it true?

Yes, it's true. The lyrics were changed because it either was incorrect English or it didn't fit the singing lines.
I'm not completely sure about the lyrics on the demo, but I think the ones displayed below are almost correct.

Cry For The Moon

Indoctrinated minds often contain sick thoughts
And commit the evil they preach against

Don't try to convince me with messages from God
You accuse us of sins committed by yourselves
It's easy to condemn without looking in the mirror
Behind the scenes opens reality

Eternal silence cries out for justice
Forgiveness is not for sale
Nor the will to forget

Follow your common sense
You cannot hide yourself
behind a fairytale forever and ever
Only by revealing the whole truth we can disclose
The soul of this bulwark forever and ever

Virginity has been stolen at very young ages
The extinguisher loses it's immunity
Morbid misuse of power in the garden of eden
Where the apple gets a youthful face

Eternal silence cries out for justice
Forgiveness is not for sale
Nor the will to forget

Follow your common sense
You cannot hide yourself
behind a fairytale forever and ever
Only by revealing the whole truth we can disclose
The soul of this bulwark forever and ever
Forever and ever

Eternal silence cries out for justice
Forgiveness is not for sale
Nor the will to forget
You can't hide yourself
Behind the fairytale forever
And keep washing your hands in innocence

Illusive Consensus

So sweet caress, never hope to last!
You showed me love and gave a meaning to my life.

So sweet caress, never hope to last!
You left me behind alone and aghast
Capured in an austere Elysium

Imperfect feelings, futile grief
Love a device against solitude
As it all went on, the love
A field in a dream that once was real

So sweet caress, never hope to last!
Destroy this illusion, we need a change of fate
Your frantic thoughts, a condemned cry

Imperfect feelings, futile grief
Love a device against solitude
As it all went on, the love
A field in a dream that once was real

[Latin Texts Unknown]

I secretly longed for something
which had never existed

First I thought it was a dream
but then it smashed into reality
Beautiful on the outside, but dead deeply within

I secretly longed for something
which had never existed

Devoted to a body without a soul

5.1. Huh? I don't understand a part of the lyrics!

That's probably because it's latin. You can read the translations here.

5.2. What's the meaning of the lyrics?

This is what Mark tells us about the The Phantom Agony lyrics:

01. Adyta "The Neverending Embrace" :
This is our intro of the CD, the lyrics are written by Simone. It's a prelude to the Embrace that Smothers part 4, 5 and 6. The main thought behind the Embrace that Smothers is that when mankind sees that there's just one god, all different religions melt together into one. All religious wars come to end end and so on. It's kind of an utopia but let's keep the faith!

02. Sensorium :
This is a philosophical song. Does chance exist, I don't think so. I don't belive in chance. But even without chance we can have our own free will. We are responsible for our acts, although nothing happens at chance.
It also deals about exploring minor parts in science instead of having a total overview. Creativity comes from the overlap between all sorts of knowledge and/or spirituality.

03. Cry for the Moon "The Embrace That Smothers - Part IV" :
This song deals about a priest who raped a child. When I wrote this lyric, this was a hot topic in the news. The basic idea behind the song is that also behind the doors of the church there are a lot of sick minds hidden. The basics of most religions are good but in this society there are a lot of sick people. With the phrase "In the garden of Eden, where the apple gets a youthful face" I try to say that Eva did eat the apple according to the bible story but this priest did also eat the apple by raping a young child. The worst thing is that often the church is afraid to loose their "good name" and so they pey the parents to keep it silent. This has to stop.

04. Feint :
This song deals about the murder on a dutch politician called "Pim Fortuyn". He was murdered because of his opinion. It's a highly poetic lyric.

05. Illusive Consensus :
Again a lyric which has been written by Simone, in short it's how love between two persons can die slowly and turn out into hate.

06. Facade of Reality "The Embrace That Smothers - Part V":
This song is dealing about the 11th of September NY, fundamentalism and religions. Power is the keyword, gaining power and use therefore religions. Especially in the middle east (arabic countries) religion is still very important in people's lifes. When people think it's good to die as martyr then the step is much smaller to offer your life for God. Others misuse this to gain more power.

07. Run for a Fall :
I've written this song after my departure from After Forever, I had to write down my frustrations. Fortunately nowadays the relationship between me and AF is good again.

08. Seif Al Din "The Embrace That Smothers - Part VI" :
This is the last song in the Embrace that Smothers cyclus. It's specified on fundamentalism again. Extremism is all kinds of ways is never good.

09. The Phantom Agony:
The last song on the album is dealing about dreams, sometimes it's hard to say if a memory is a dream or if it happened in real. Some people think we do live in our dreams and lifetime is a big Façade. With Lucid Dreaming you can get controll of your dreams and create a new world within the unknown.

5.3. What's "The Embrace That Smothers"?

It's a concept. Part 1, 2 and 3 are on the After Forever album Prison Of Desire, part 4,5 and 6 on the first Epica album The Phantom Agony and part 7, 8 and 9 are on the third Epica album, The Divine Conspiracy. The concept deals with fundamentalism and religious issues.

5.4. Who made the band pictures in the booklet?

The photographer of The Phantom Agony is Angelique van Woerkom.

6. Consign To Oblivion

6.2. What's the meaning of the lyrics?

This is what Mark & Simone tell us about the Consign to Oblivion lyrics:

01. Hunab K'u :
Music
Mark: This intro was written by Yves Huts. We were to choose out of two different intro's, one of which written by me. My intro was more in line with the last intro, which can be heard on 'the Phantom Agony'. Because we didn't want to repeat ourselves, and above all because Yves' intro was very beautiful, we decided to go for his intro.
Lyrics
Mark: Hunab K'u is the prologue of the 'a new age dawns' trilogy. It tells the story of the origin and centre of the universe.

02. Dance of Fate :
Music
Mark: The song is written around the chorus and couplets and was partly brought about in Yves' homestudio where Coen, Yves and I have worked on many songs. Yves wrote some guitarparts and the track soon came to be. Also Simone's vocal parts came to her pretty fast.
Lyrics
Simone: This song is about our fate. Everyone has to experience his own fate, whether you like it or not. Some try to defy destiny, but will find out soon enough that even that was part of their fate. I don't believe in chance and my opinion is that you have to experience your fate. You must not try to influence the future to erase the past. Sometimes you are very uncertain of your future. You don't know how long you will live. When you are young you think you've got your whole live still ahead of you, but just as well, you could suffer from some terminal disease! Something like that makes you aware of the fragility of life. These lyrics are pretty easy to interpret, I think.

03. The Last Crusade :
Music
Mark: This song started out with the intro and after that also this puzzle soon fell into place. We have goaled ourselves to write songs with a rather cathy chorus. This is one of such songs. While playing the songs of our previous cd in front of an audience we noticed that a song like Cry for the Moon provoced great responses amongst the audience, partly because of the cathy chorus. We have played 'the Last Crusade' live several times already, and the chorus indeed seems to stay hanging in people's heads .
Lyrics
Mark: The lyrics are about a group of very fanatic religious people.
Every believe has them; a solid core that passes by people's front doors to convince them of their ideas. Incredibly annoying, that is. For example when people approach you on the street and you are dragged into a discussion which eventually ends up one-sided. Their only goal is to convert you into their believe, your own arguments aren't heard or simply whiped with a weak smile. I don't like that and therefore I've written a song about such happenings, looking at the topic from their perspective. I named the song 'the Last Crusade' because I am convinced that it is a concluding case and that soon the thought will occur to people that all those different religious believes will eventually lead back to the same source, so eventually they all believe in one god.

04. Solitary Ground :
Music
Mark: This is a song that took a lot of editing before we were satisfied with it. The song in it's original shape was much longer, but we reduced it into catchier proportions. In the original shape it was a little too tedious. We only finished writing this song when we were already in the studio.
Lyrics
Simone: It's a very personal song, it is specificly about my desire to have a place to go, a home. On one side, I find touring with the band absolutely fantastic, but sometimes I really wish I didn't have to pack my suitcase anymore.

05. Blank Infinity :
Music
Mark: It's a powerful and fresh song, easy to listen to, with a calm piano intro and a sort of mid-tempo feel to it. It is one of the first songs we have written for this album.
Lyrics
Simone: It's a big mix of feelings, frustrations, an endless field full of thoughts. I think I've written a lot of thing subconsciously, and they will only after a while get clear in my mind.

06. Force of the Shore :
Music
Mark: This is the first real heavy song on the album. The song really just sláms into it, it opens with very powerful choirparts. This track contains nearly all possible Epica-elements: Choirs, orchestra, grunts, screams, Simone and of course a lot of metal. Only the middle part is a bit guiet, but apart from that it is a very fierce song.
Lyrics
Simone: This song is about the ideal-image that nowadays is a huge issue in our society. Everything is all about the appearance. People concentrate on that way too much and neglect their inner strength. They're hidden behind a mask. They're too busy catching up with the past, when they were young, causing them to forget to live in the present. The 'force of the shore' is sort of similar to the expression 'don't judge a book by it's cover'.

07. Quietus :
Music
Mark: Yves came up with this Irish-sounding intro and I followed quickly with the foundation for the song. I think that this song will do very good live because you can easily involve the audience in the show.
Lyrics
Simone: People have to make choices in their life. Often, these are the kind of choises that make them more mature, that make them loose their innocence. It is often difficult to make these choices. Sometimes you make the wrong decision and are afraid to live the consequences.

08. Mother of Light :
Music
Mark: The foundation for this song is already very old. I had originally written the song with the intention to use it for the After Forever album 'Decipher'. But something was missing in the song at the moment I had finished it, so I decided I didn't want to use it for the cd. It would be a sin to use a song you feel discontent about. So eventually it took me 3 to 4 years to finally finish this song. I'm glad that I could find the patience, because now the song sounds the way I had always meant for it to sound!
Lyrics
Mark: The lyrics are the most personal ones I've written so far, so I'll leave this one open the listener's own interpretation .

09. Trois vierges :
Music
Mark: Personally, I really like ballads that have a sort of musical-like feel to it. This is also the track where Simone sings a duet with Roy Khan from kamelot. Because in my opinion his voice sounds best in the Kamelot ballads we decided this song would fit him best. The song was ready and written for Roy before we even asked him. This song will also be used for the Dutch movie 'Joyride', for which Epica had written the score.
Lyrics
Simone: I was assigned to write these lyrics for the film. The titel recalls the theme the movie is based on for the biggest part. I don't want to tell you too much about this, since the movie hasn't been released yet.

10. Another Me 'In Lack 'ech' :
Lyrics
Mark: This is the only song that I've written entirely by myself. I wanted to make a song with a very pumping, loud bass. There are also many choirparts in it. At first, I meant to use this track as a bonus for one of the singles, but because it turned out so well we decided to use it for the album after all.
Lyrics
Mark: It is about a saying that is as old as mankind: 'do not do to another what you do not want to happen to yourself.' The Maya's added the phrase 'for one day you will be that other.'
'In Lack'ech', the subtitle of the song, means 'you are only another me.' When you bring evil to another, you will get it back just as bad but it also works the other way around: 'do good, get good in return'.

11. Consign to Oblivion :
Music
Mark: this is my personal favourite song of the cd. Originally, this song was a lot shorter, but because many fans had let me know they were hoping for a long song on the new record we decided to build it up to a short 10 minutes. I'm very glad with the advice of our fans, because without it this song would never have turned out the way it did. I think this song is going to be a solid one on our setlist in the future!
Lyrics
Mark: The lyrics are about the fact that people nowadays only care about themselves and do not worry at all about nature, that keeps on worsening, and about other people. The only thing that counts is to keep up the economy and to present good yearmarks. There is more to the world than this!! There will have to be a clear change in this rusted thinking-pattern, because otherwise a dramatic future awaits us. Because I always like to see the positive side of things, I think the notion will come, but this will have to happen very quickly!

8. The Score - An Epic Journey

8.1. What's the movie the music was written for?

The Dutch movie the music is written for is called "Joyride".

8.2 Why didn't they release the cd as the official soundtrack?

The movie makers decided they didn't want to use a lot of the music that the bandmembers had written. Therefore releasing it as an official soundtrack seems quite useless, since most of the music can't even be heard in the movie. That's the reason why they released it as an Epica album, even though not all the members worked on it. Also, to make it look a bit more like an Epica’s album, they decided to add ‘Quietus (score version) & Solitary Ground (single version), which have the whole band playing and the participation of most of the bandmembers in the composition of the lyrics/music.

9. The Divine Conspiracy

9.2. What's the meaning of the lyrics?

This is what Mark tells us about the The Divine Conspiracy lyrics (and what Yves tells us about the music):

By Diletta from Reflections of Darkness

Indigo
Mark: "The prologue is dealing about a person who feels he is different from other human beings since he was born. He's the red line in the story. The first part is dealing about the negative psyche of the human being. Our main character goes through all of these and learns from it."

The Obsessive Devotion
Mark: "Someone breaks up and the other person cannot accept it and starts kind of stalking her."
Yves: "First (real) song on the album and already pretty hard and fast. It has kind of a dark atmosphere and a lot of groovy parts to which you can headbang very well. We already play this one live. First song of the concept about the negative human psyche."

Menace of Vanity
Mark: "About an ego that gets too big and destroys friendships."
Yves: "Short, catchy, heavy and dark song. I believe it is the heaviest and fastest song on the album."

Chasing the Dragon
Mark: "Drug addiction."
Yves: "This is kind of the “Run for a fall” of the album. It starts as a ballad, but over time it gets heavier and heavier and towards the end there are even blast beats!"

Never Enough
Mark: "Greed; the second part deals about the main character that starts travelling around the world and gets in touch with many cultures and especially with many religions."
Yves: "Catchy song with some modern sounds, simple structure so pretty easy to listen to."

La'fetach Chatat Rovetz
Mark: "Means 'sin is crouching at your door', a Hebrew quote from their bible."
Yves: "This is more an intro to Death of a Dream. No vocals, drums or guitar here. It has kind of an Eastern/Hebrew feel to it."

Death of a Dream
Mark: "About Islam women suppression."
Yves: "Pretty heavy song and more guitar-oriented with an eastern feel."

Living a Lie
Mark: "Christianity, people with an unborn child with a terrible handicap (the child will die after giving birth) believe that god will save their child and don't accept the advices of the medical staff who tell them their child is lost."
Yves: "Short, catchy, melodic song that would be a good candidate for a single. It’s also about religion."

Fools of Damnation
Mark: "Again Islam, be a slave to Allah and do whatever is needed to please the god. Also if it seems incorrect and doubtful what others tell you to do to please Allah. The last part is dealing about the knowledge the main character has gained. He spreads the word about religions and tells people about the good basics of the religions and about the dark sides."
Yves: "Second longest song. It starts eastern but the mood changes and it becomes pretty fast, complex and even progressive. It’s about religion."

Beyond Belief
Mark: "Dealing about this (above) and natural disasters which have been caused by mankind."
Yves: "Ad plays his first and only solo on this song!"

Safeguard to Paradise
Mark: "The main character gets murdered because of his opinion of religions. It's dealing about freedom which is the highest good we have ever had and should never get lost."
Yves: "Piano-ballad, no guitars or drums. Female vocals, piano and orchestration. Very light atmosphere that gives a little relief to the general heavy, dark mood of the album. Except for the intro this is the shortest song."

Sancta Terra
Mark: "The main character in the afterlife."
Yves: "A steady pulsating beat here. The choir is quite prominent in this song."

The Divine Conspiracy
Mark: "Deals about the theory which the main character has revealed: As a test, God created all kinds of different religions and released those upon humanity to see if they would be able to find the true nature of them, realizing that in all religions it is actually the same. Will humanity see this or keep on killing people who finds out?"
Yves: "Longest Epica-song ever. It has a pretty long intro and outro and the orchestration sounds very much like a film score."

9.5. Is Simone really naked on the cover? Why?

According to Simone:
"The idea behind the cover is that we are all born innocent - say, naked - and as your live progresses you will be marked for life. This is what the tattoos stand for. The apple is a symbol for Eve, who became a mortal by eating that piece of fruit. It was my own idea to be be butt naked on the cover, though many people think Nuclear Blast (our label) has pushed me to do so. I really had to convince the other band members that I really wanted to do it - for me it's a form of pure art. That's why I didn't really mind taking my clothes off. The shoot with Andrea Beckers was a strange experience and Mattias Norén (who has designed the booklet) has turned it into something really beautiful."

9.6. Is The Divine Conspiracy really a concept album? What's the concept?

Yes it's really a concept album.
"The concept deals with the theory that, as a test, God created all kinds of different religions and released those upon humanity to see if they would be able to find the true nature of them, realizing that in all religions it is actually the same. But there’s more to it, it also concludes the “Embrace That Smothers” concept that could already be found on The Phantom Agony."
